Colombo, May 6 (newsin.asia) – The number of coronavirus patients detected in Sri Lanka crossed the 117,000 mark yesterday (5) as another 1939 new Covid-19 cases had been detected within the day.
The total number of COVID-19 positive cases stands at 117,529. with 16,734 active cases across the island according to the Government Information Department. The number of recovered and discharged cases has increased to 100,075.

Fourteen COVID-19 related deaths were reported yesterday (5) which brings the total number of COVID-19 deaths recorded in the country to 734.
Sri Lanka also witnessed the first-ever death of a pregnant woman today from the COVID-19 virus, the Public Health Inspectors’ Union said. The victim was a 45-years-old resident of Narangoda Paluwa (West) in Ragama.
According to the Government Information Department, 1,897 of the new cases reported today are associated with the New Year coronavirus cluster. Meanwhile, the remaining 42 have been identified as arrivals from foreign countries.
A total of 238 people who failed to wear face masks and maintain social distancing have been arrested by the police on Wednesday (May 05).
Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said cases were filed against 5,400 of such arrestees and majority of them have been found guilty of the charges levelled against them.
