Colombo, January 29 – Sri Lanka officially commenced its Covid 19 vaccination program this morning (29).
Head of the National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), Army Commander General Shavendra Silva speaking to the media noted that the vaccination program was officially kicked off at the IDH hospital this morning. He added that inoculations are also taking place at the Army hospital located in Narahenpita.
General Silva noted that the administering of vaccines will take place today in 6 other hospitals as well as the Army Camp located in Panagoda. He added that the number of locations used to administer the vaccine would increase tomorrow.
Frontline health workers, members of the tri forces, police officers, and airport staff have been given priority when administering the vaccine.
The vaccination drive commenced today after Sri Lanka received a shipment of 500,000 vials of vaccine from India as a donation. The donated vaccines were created by Oxford-AstraZeneca and are being mass-produced in India.
