London, June 9 (newsin.asia): Twelve of the 30 persons of Pakistani origin who contested the June 8 British parliamentary elections, have won. The winners include five women candidates. Nine belong to the Labor party while three represent the Conservative party.
Although most candidates had won the previous election, Afzal Khan from Gorton area of Manchester and Muhammad Yaseen from Bendford, both Labor, have been elected for the first time, The Express Tribune reports.
Labor candidate Yasmin Qureshi was re-elected as MP from Bolton South East. Dr Rosena Allin-Khan (Labor) won from Tooting, London with a 15,000 majority. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, sent his congratulations to the emergency room doctor for her “incredible result”.
Shabana Mahmood contesting from Birmingham, Ladywood, was re-elected as the Labor MP. She won with an overwhelming margin of over 28,000 votes.
From Bradford West, Labour party’s Naz Shah was elected with over 29,000 votes.
Meanwhile, 12 Indian candidates also managed to make their way to the British parliament.
Of those successful British-Indians, seven represent Labor while five were elected on tickets from the Conservatives.
