November 24 (newsin.asia) – Lanka Comic Con is Sri Lanka’s fastest-growing, and (probably) largest youth cultural festival. It brings together fans of comics, movies, costumes, music, and art to celebrate the artists and IP’s they love. Lanka Comic Con returns with its 5th edition this December at the Trace Expert City, Maradana.
Unlike a lot of other conventions, Lanka Comic Con is not just about the merchandise or the big-names in international entertainment. It is a carefully curated space for promoting local talent – from amateur artists, independent filmmakers, game developers, and science fiction and fantasy writers and comics creators both from Sri Lank and the Asian region. They partner with various non-profit educational and awareness groups on their youths projects and strongly encourage their visitors to do so too. Over the years it has developed into a vibrant platform for artistic expression, education, and social engagement.
Lanka Comic Con is also proud to be an incubator for small, innovative, new Geek –related businesses. It is the ideal platform for start-ups and new businesses (tech, clothing, entertainment, food, etc..) to meet face to face and interact with their potential customer base and get real-time feedback. Some of our regular vendors and geek community vendors, came to our inaugural event as hobbyists, or home-based/ part-time businesses and many of them have over the course of 5 years graduated to having brick- and -mortar stores or robust online businesses.
In the 5 years since our first Lanka Comic Con event, we’ve seen the emergence and rapid development of not just Geek businesses but Comics creators, musicians, science fiction writers of international repute, fantastically talented cosplayers and designers and video games developers. This is what we are proudest of, being able to play a part in creating a thriving Geek Community in Sri Lanka on so many levels.
And last but not least, Lanka Comic Con is about inclusivity. It is a space that welcomes everyone irrespective of gender, ethnicity or language. That is at the core of everything we do- from our tri-lingual logos and signage to our panels and events carried out in different languages, to create a safe, harassment-free space for cosplayers, guests and visitors.
We are a family-friendly event with some sort of activity for every age-group. We’ve had 13-year-old game masters running Dungeons and Dragons campaigns and 60-year-old scientists from JLP Aerospace discussing the science of Star Trek. At the end of the day, Lanka Comic Con is a community of like-minded individuals, who embrace a distinct identity and set of values and are happy to engage and share them with the rest of the world.
Lanka Comic Con will be held on 7th and 8th December 2019 at the Trace Expert City, Maradana.
