Colombo, Dec 1 (NIA) – Sri Lanka’s President, Maithripala Sirisena, who is leading his ‘good governance’ government, on Thurday, ordered the Police Chief to report to him on which VIPs use a convoy of back-up vehicles for their security.
He has ordered the Police Chief to instruct the Police to check who is inside the VIP vehicles which is accompanied by atleast 6 or 7 convoy vehicles.
“I told the cabinet last week that I’m going to ask the IGP to report back to me about the people who use 6, 7 escort vehicles,” the President said.
“I want to know who goes like this, are these VIPs or criminals like Choppe, Maru Sira, Wele Suda or Army Wimale? So I can personally talk to them and see what kind of sickness they have.”
“They drive at high speeds without caring for speed limits, and they don’t care whether it’s left or right.”
“Even Police allow them thinking they are VVIPs or VIPs because they can’t identify who is inside.”
“There is no war, so no one in this country needs to go like that. Even cabinet ministers told me that one back-up vehicle is sufficient for them for security,” the President said.
Vehicles of VVIPs and VIPs are often known to drive in high speed, causing accidents and severe inconvenience to the public.
Sri Lanka, recently announced in its budget proposals for 2017, that it would impose a hefty Rs.25,000 fine for six type of traffic offences which include speed driving, over taking from the left, drunk driving and driving without a valid license.
Last year alone, over 2800 people died in accidents throughout the country.
