Colombo, Jan 5 (NIA) – Sri Lanka’s President, Maithripala Sirisena, on Thursday said that no one could topple the unity government and such dreams would only remain as a dream.
Speaking at the 50th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, Sirisena said that the government would not be changed under the present constitutional provisions and there was no way in which anyone could sweep it away.
Sirisena’s remarks came amidst a spate of heated words between Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and former President Mahinda Rajapakse.
Rajapakse last week told foreign based journalists in Colombo that he was confident of toppling the government in 2017 afterwhich Wickremesinghe, in humour, invited Rajapakse to topple the government while he visited Switzerland next week.
Rajapakse then on Wednesday charged that he would topple the government while Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was in the country, as he was not a backstabber.
