March 3 (DailyNews) – A Sri Lankan student named Sisilal De Silva and his colleague Benjamin Weston have managed to develop ‘LinguaGPT,” an artificial intelligence application that is accessible in over 100 different languages.
Prior to this, AI applications of this nature were being created and utilised across the world, but they were restricted to a very few languages and were not accessible to people who are not very conversant in the English language. ‘LinguaGPT’ revolutionises the field of AI by breaking the language barrier.

LinguaGPT can be accessed by Sri Lankans in both Tamil and Sinhala languages. This AI application has multitude of uses, in the simplest form, it does what it is asked to. If you ask it to draft clauses in a contract, it will. If you ask it to write an assignment for you, it will. If you ask for help to come up with a marketing idea, it will. This application does not just revolutionise accessibility of AI to Sri Lanka and several other parts of the world, it makes life easier for both professionals and university students. LinguaGPT received its inspiration from ChatGPT AI application that is being used worldwide.
This AI program was created by Sisilal de Silva and Benjamin Luke Weston. Sisilal is a Sri Lankan national, and Benjamin is a British national. Both are final year students studying Computer Science at the University of Liverpool, UK. Kanchana Ekanayake, another Sri Lankan also worked in the project as a team member and provided his expertise.
Even now, significant amount of international attention has been drawn on this product. The website is constantly operating at full capacity. Computer science researchers have said that this as a big step in removing language barriers in using AI globally. I asked lingua GPT, itself what linguaGPT is, in its own words, ‘Lingua GPT is a natural language processing (NLP) model developed by OpenAI.
It is a transformer-based language model that was trained on a dataset of over 8 million webpages. It is designed to generate human-like text from a given prompt. It can be used for a variety of tasks, such as summarization, question-answering, and machine translation.
What is particularly noteworthy is that the app which LinguaGPT gets its inspiration from, ChatGPT is an AI developed by San Francisco-based startup OpenAI, which was co-founded by world renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk and Sam Altman and it is backed by several investors including Microsoft.
