Colombo, Dec 28 (NIA) – Sri Lanka’s Home Ministry on Wednesday revised the date of the Day of Mourning in view of Former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake’s funeral to Dec 30th and not 31st as initially announced.
Wickramanayake, passed away on Tuesday after being hospitalized for several days. He was 83 years old at the time of his death.
He was the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka from 2000 to 2001 and again from 2005 to 2010. He was also a senior vice-president of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party. In the present government, Wickremenayake was a senior adviser to President Maithripala Sirisena.
Wickramanayake entered parliament in 1960. Joining the SLFP in 1962, he was re-elected from Horana electorate in 1965 and 1970. He later returned to the Parliament from Kalutara District.
President Maithripala Sirisena has given instructions to conduct the funeral of the former Prime Minister with full state patronage.
