Colombo, April 24 (NIA) – Sri Lanka’s petroleum workers on Monday called off an island wide petroleum strike after holding talks with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Petroleum Minister Chandima Weerakkody.
During the talks, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe had given a written assurance that any agreement over the oil storage tanks in the eastern city of Trincomalee with India would not be signed during his Indian visit which starts tomorrow, trade unions said.
The strike which affected Sri Lanka’s transport sector, was launched on Sunday midnight by seven trade unions from the petroleum sector over the government’s move to sign a pact with India regarding the oil tanks in the Eastern port city of Trincomalee.
