Colombo, May 3 (NIA) – Sri Lanka’s cabinet, on Wednesday, agreed to enter into an agreement with the China EXIM Bank to construct the Thalpitigala reservoir dam across the Uma Oya in the Badulla District, in the central highlands of Sri Lanka.
Cabinet Spokesperson, Gayantha Karunathilleke told a news briefing here that the project expects to provide irrigation water to the Thalpitigala area as well as to provide drinking water to Wasanagama, Madulla, Thetilla, and Beramada villages in Kandaketiya Divisional Secretary’s Division and to generate electricity of 51 GWh annually.
Karunathilleke said the Cabinet had already approved the project at an estimated cost of 174 million US dollars.
“The EXIM Bank of China has agreed to provide 85% of funds of the estimate and accordingly, the proposal made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, in his capacity as the Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs, to enter into an agreement with the China EXIM Bank in this regard, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers,” Karunathilleke said.
