Colombo, Feb 13 (newsin.asia) – Sri Lanka’s Prisons Department, on Wednesday said it was on the look out for two hangmen after President Maithripala Sirisena vowed to implement the death penalty on convicted drug traffickers within the next two months.
Prisons Spokesperson, Thushara Upuldeniya said that an advertisement had already been released in the local media calling for applications, and any interested individuals could apply if they met the listed criteria.
He said although no applications had been received yet, they were expecting individuals to apply as the deadline was Feb 25.
“The application is open for any interested individuals and not just limited to ex members of the armed forces. We are hoping to hire two hangmen and will go through the applications once they are received,” Upuldeniya said.
According to the advertisement released in the local media earlier this week, selected candidates will be referred to a medical test conducted at the National Hospital to check their mind and mental strength.
Applicants should also have an excellent moral character and should not have any past criminal records.
Applicants should also be between 18 and 45 years of age.

Prison officials said the Prisons Department had hired two hangmen before, but they had vacated their posts as they had no work to do.
President Sirisena, in a severe attempt to crack down on the drug menace, said last week that the death penalty on convicted drug traffickers will be imposed within the next two months in order to free the country from drugs by 2020.
Although capital punishment is a legal penalty in Sri Lanka, there have been no executions carried out since 1976.
