Karachi, January 10 (Express Tribune): Ranveer Singh’s much-anticipated film Gully Boy’s trailer is finally out and let’s just say, it’s not like anything you’ve probably seen before. The first scene of the promo shows a rap competition between two ‘gully boys’ setting the tone for the rest of the video.
The rap continues through to the next scene which has Singh’s character Naved writing in his journal.
Then comes Alia Bhatt’s appearance as Sakina. “Sakina tumhe cooking aati hai? (Do you know how to cook?)” asks her potential mother–in-law to which Bhatt’s character responds, “Nahi, lekin agar sab kuch sahi raha toh ek din aap ka liver transplant kar sakti hu (No, but if everything goes well, then I can perform a liver transplant on you),” showing off her wit and sarcasm.

Singh plays Bhatt’s boyfriend. This is followed by her smashing a bottle on a girl’s head – no one messes with her!
With the rap still in the backdrop, the trailer carries on showing Naved’s desire and struggle to become a big rapper, rather than following in his father’s footsteps and go on to become a driver. “Naukar ka beta, naukar banega yeh fitrat hai,” a corporate officer says to Naved.
His abusive father, on the other hand, is not too happy with his choices. He wants Naved to focus on his studies and ends up giving him an ultimatum. But “apna time ayega” is what keeps Naved going.”
Overall, the trailer provides the essence of the film in a great way. Singh’s rapping skills are on point which is pleasantly surprising and the plot is interestingly raw.
Alongside Singh and Bhatt, Gully Boy features Kalki Koechlin, Vijay Raaz and Kubbra Sait. Directed by Zoya Akhtar, it is slated for release on Valentine’s Day this year.
