Colombo, Decembr 20 (newsin.asia): Ms.P.S.M.Charles, a Special Grade Officer of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service with vast experience, is to be appointed as Governor of the Tamil-speaking Northern Province, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa told Foreign Correspondents here on Thursday.
Ms.Charles is a Tamil. She will be the first woman to be Governor of the Northern Province, though she will not be first Tamil to hold that office.
Ms. Charles had previously served as the Additional Government Agent (GA) and the GA of Vavuniya and Batticaloa districts. She was Director General of Customs and Secretary to the Health Ministry. After Eelam War IV, in 2009, Ms.Charles was in charge of the refugee camps on the outskirts of Vavuniya, housing about 290,000 people from the war-torn Wanni districts of Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Mannar.
The post of Governor is impotant and powerful now, in the absense of an elected Provincial Council. Fresh elections to the council are awaited.
Mrs. Charles is a graduate of the University of Jaffna. She obtained two Masters degrees from the Universities of Peradeniya and Rajarata in the fields of Disaster Management and Business Administration.
