Colombo, May 27 (News 1st) – The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) said there is a possibility of ACID RAINS as a result of the blazing X-PRESS PEARL container ship in the seas off the Colombo harbour.
Speaking to News 1st, Chairperson of the Marine Environment Protection Authority, Dharshani Lahandapura said based on a scientific approach, Nitrogen Oxide gas emitted into the atmosphere will mix with water particles in the upper atmosphere to produce Nitric acid also known as Acid rain.
Thereby, Dharshani Lahandapura noted that such air currents could move from the coastal areas into the country, adding that there is a possibility of acid rains in the surrounding areas.
She advised the people to be vigilant in this regard, to refrain from being exposed to rain directly these days, and to cover metal structures or vehicles outdoors.
