Male, February 3 (Maldives Independent): Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen on Saturday sacked Acting Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Saudhee, making him the second police chief to be fired in 48 hours.
A police spokesman told media Saturday that President Yameen has appointed Deputy Commissioner Abdulla Nawaz to replace him.
Former commissioner Ahmed Areef was fired Thursday night, hours after police announced it would enforce a Supreme Court order to release of high-profile prisoners including former President Mohamed Nahseed.
Saudhee, who was Deputy Commissioner was promoted that same night after the court’s announcement.
Attorney General Mohamed Anil told the media that Areef was fired because the President was unable to contact him following the Supreme Court’s ruling. However, the reasons behind Saudhee’s sacking remains unclear.
In November last year, the Maldivian media reported a serious rift between Areef and Saudhee and a committee had been appointed by the President to settle issues between the two)
