Chiitagong, September 29 (BDNews24): India is to give 7000 mt of relief material for the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, the Indian High Commissioner in that country, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, said here on Thursday, after taking charge of 700 mt of aid from India brought by INS Ghariyal
Another 53.5 tonnes of aid, China’s second shipment, arrived at Chittagong’s Shah Amanat International Airport around 9 am.
High Commissioner Shringla handed over the relief material to the Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Zillur Rahman Chowdhury.
Thursday’s shipment from India included rice, lentils, salt, sugar, tea, powdered milk, biscuits, soap and mosquito nets.
The relief is to be distributed in 62,000 packets, said Shringla.
On Sept 14, aid weighing 53 tonnes arrived from India. Another 107 tonnes arrived the following day. Thursday’s shipment takes the total amount of India’s aid to 860 tonnes.
India has pledged to donate around 7,000 tonnes of aid for the Rohingyas, said Shringla.
Thursday’s aid shipment from China included 3,000 blankets.
Chinese Embassy Commercial Counsellor Li Guangjun turned over the relief shipment to officials of the Chittagong administration.
Another 57.03 tonnes of aid had arrived from China on Wednesday, Chittagong Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Md Habibur Rahman told bdnews24.com.
The shipment of 2,200 tents was sent for distribution in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya.
China has so far sent a total of 110.53 tonnes of aid for the Rohingyas. Chinese Ambassador Ma Mingqiang has said his country will send 150 tonnes of emergency aid for refugees in Chittagong.
Nearly 500,000 Rohingyas have fled across the border into Bangladesh in the month following the start of a Myanmar military crackdown in Rakhine State.
The 15 members of the United Nations Security Council are to meet on Thursday for a briefing on the Rohingya crisis by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Bangladesh will present its case at the meeting, said Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali.
