Colombo, May 21 (Xinhua): The Pettah Market in Colombo, Sri Lanka, was bustling during the weekend. Located in northern Colombo, ‘Pettah’ as it is called in short, is one of Sri Lanka’s most important commodity hubs, where one can find virtually everything. The array is truly amazing: from electronics to fashion accessories, varieties of grain, spices, fresh fruits and vegetables to seafood and meat. There are wholesalers and retailers, all in one huge of complex. The many streets and narrow lanes are chock- a -block with trucks, tuk-tuks and hand carts, not to speak of jostling pedestrians.
Due to the economic crisis, business in Pettah is not as prosperous as before, but shoppers are there in good numbers and the wholesale food market, which is closely related to the lives of locals, is still very busy. At the other small commodities wholesale market in Pettah, one sees Sri Lankan customers looking for super deals. Goods abound, though the number of buyers may be less because of the fall in incomes due to the economic squeeze arising from the foreign exchange shortage.
