Colombo, January 22 (Xinhua Video): The video below shows how a Chinese company has reclaimed 269 hectares of land off the shore of the Sri Lankan capital to build the Colombo Port City which is to cost US$ 1.4 billion.
Specially equipped vessels take sand from a mining area and deposit it on the area earmarked for reclamation. Huge and long nozzles are used to throw the sand on to the areas to be filled up. Each vessel takes about 60 minutes to do discharge its load.
The Sri Lankan Minister of Megapolis, Champika Ranawaka described the operation as a “scientific marvel” and the Colombo Port City project as a whole as one of the “spectacular projects in Sri Lanka.”
The Colombo Port City project, which is a joint venture of a Chinese company and the Sri Lankan government, has generated 4,000 jobs for Sri Lankans.
