Colombo, August 14 (Daily Mirror): The Sri Lankan Minister for Science and Technology, Susil Premajayantha has said that the agreement between the Sri Lankan government and the Chinese company, CMPort, on the Hambantota harbor, was signed on July 29 before the cabinet Sub-Committee on the deal had submitted its report.
Premajayantha ,who belongs to the Sirisena faction of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) , said on Sunday, that several conditions favorable to Sri Lanka had been recommended by the Sub Committee appointed to study the contents of the Hambantota Harbor Lease Agreement.
“Decreasing the lease period from 99 years and keeping the ratio of shares at 50:50 or somewhere close to that were some of the recommendation of the committee,” he recalled..
But the agreement was signed in a hurry before the committee report could be presented, he added.
“Although provisions are included for amendments in the agreement, these can be done only by mutual consent,” he said.
“Meanwhile, arrangements are also being made to lease out the Trincomalee harbor to India. The country would have to face difficult situations by transferring two main harbors to foreign nations,” Premajayantha contended.
