Colombo, Oct 26 (DailyMirror) – A private-sector project to construct a formula one racing track in Hambantota is under discussion with some international investors having shown interest, but the project is yet to be finalized, the Daily Mirror learns.
The project has already attracted some investors from Europe, but is in the initial stages of discussions with the government. The reason why Hambantota has been selected is because of the Hambantota Port and the Mattala International Airport which could bring in spectators and the drivers along with the cars, in the event an international event is held.

However, officials reiterated that discussions were in the initial stages only and there could be a change of location if finalized.
Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa when contacted by Daily Mirror said international investors who had an interest in investing in Sri Lanka’s sports sector could forward their proposals to the Ministry and the government would assist them after studying their proposals.

He said even if this included an F1 formula one racing track, international investors could forward their proposals and if it helped boost Sri Lanka’s sports and tourism economies, a suitable location would be allocated. He said it did not necessarily have to be in his constituency, Hambantota but it could be constructed in the most suitable part of the country. Namal however said he had not received details of an F1 track that would be constructed in Hambantota as yet.
According to officials, if discussions over the project turn out to be fruitful. it will boost tourism in the area as well as strengthen the economy as international formula one events could then be hosted in Sri Lanka.
The cabinet is yet to be briefed about any such project, the Daily Mirror learns. (Jamila Husain)
