Dhaka, September 25 (BDNews24): China says it is willing to help settle the Rohingya crisis and will be sending, in two days’ time, 150 mt of relief material to Rohingyas who have taken refuge in Bangladesh.
This was stated by the Chinese Ambassador in Bangladesh, Ma Mingqiang, at a function here on Monday to commemorate the founding of the Peoples’ Republic of China 68 years ago.
The statement came in the wake of suggestions that Bangladesh should lobby with China to exert pressure on Myanmar to stop violence against the Rohingyas and take back the 422,000 refugees.
China and Myanmar have close economic and diplomatic ties. China has dismissed speculation that the democratization of Myanmar will lead to weakening of Sino-Myanmar relations..
A ruling Awami League delegation is currently discussing the issue with Chinese leaders in Beijing.
Barrister Biplab Barua, Deputy Office Secretary of the AL said that the Vice-President, International Relations, of the Chinese Communist Party Li Jun, gave them an assurance that Beijing will try to influence Myanmar to address Bangladesh’s concerns on the Rohingya issue and ‘settle the problem’.
