Colombo, May 23 (NIA) – Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Tuesday said that area police heads would be held responsible if any racial attacks against minorities take place in the island country.
In a cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, President Maithripala Sirisena ordered his Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayake to conducted a full probe into the recent attacks against minority Muslims and Tamils and take stern action against those responsible.
When Minister of Co-Existence and National Dialogue Mano Ganeshan had raised the matter during the cabinet meeting, Wickremesinghe pointed out that if such incidents continue then the area police seniors would be held responsible.
“The President and Prime Minister said that this was not an issue with Muslims or Tamils but instead this was a national issue which needed to be addressed. The President also instructed Sagala Ratnayake to conduct a thorough probe,” Ganeshan told NewsIn.Asia.
Ganeshan said that the President also instructed his cabinet that he would not tolerate any acts of racism. Muslim Ministers were also present at the meeting.
