Colombo, Feb 4 (NIA) – Several countries, on Saturday, sent its best wishes to Sri Lanka, who is celebrating its 69th Independence Day.
In a message, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, said, “It gives me great pleasure to send Your Excellency Maithripala Sirisena my congratulations on the celebration of your National Day, together with my best wishes for the good fortune and happiness of the people of Sri Lanka in the coming year.”
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Sri Lanka was a valued friend and neighbour and while sending his Independence Day greetings, he said “May Sri Lanka continue to prosper in the years to come.”
The European Union who recently announced that it would restore the GSP plus trade concessions to Sri Lanka congratulated Sri Lanka on 69 years of Independence and added that National Reconciliation would be a fitting way to celebrate 70 years.
US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Athul Keshap said Americans joined him in celebrating the country’s peace and reconciliation, greater prosperity, democracy and freedom.
