Colombo, Oct 3 (newsin.asia) – Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, on Tuesday called on all political parties in the island country to unite as the Parliament celebrated its 70th anniversary.
Speaking at a special session in Parliament, Sirisena said the objective of his government was to further strengthen Parliament through a constitution, which strengthened the rights of all the citizens in an undivided unitary state and emphasized that the assistance of all political parties was expected.
He invited all to commit themselves in bringing economic prosperity, while following a political agenda which deviated power from one person to a collective power.
The President also called for the need to maintain an independent judiciary and a strict rule of law while strengthening the democracy, human rights and fundamental rights.
The President also recalled with great respect all the political leaders who had rendered their service during the 70 year parliamentary history.
Speakers of India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Maldives and Nepal who are presently in the country to attend the 8th conference of the Association of the SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians (ASSP) also attended the special parliamentary session.
