Colombo, Feb 5 (newsin.asia) – Six people were arrested in Sri Lanka on Tuesday after a ferris wheel bucket collapsed at an amusement park in Veyangoda, in the western province, killing a mother and her six year old daughter, police said.
The tragedy occurred on Monday morning as the country celebrated its 71st Independence Day holiday.
Police said the bucket carrying the mother and daughter detached from the ferris wheel when it reached the very top, crashing to the ground, killing the mother and critically injuring the child.
The six year old girl on Tuesday morning succumbed to her injuries.
Police said those arrested included the owner of the amusement park, three technicians and the machine operator. They will be produced before a local court later Tuesday.
The amusement park has been temporarily shut down.
