Colombo, April 17 (newsin.asia) – Sri Lankan Police, on Wednesday said that 30 people had been killed in road accidents during the island’s local new year while at least 200 people had been injured in accidents reported across the country.
Head of the Police Motor Traffic Division, DIG Ajith Rohana told journalists that over 8000 police officers had been deployed to maintain law and order in the island during the local new year which began from April 13, and to date 1270 drunk drivers had been arrested.
Rohana said police had also filed over 34,000 cases against drivers committing various other traffic offences.
The government information department said that according to the Colombo National Hospital, the number of accidents during the New Year festival this year had increased in comparison to the previous year.
Sri Lankans, this week celebrated the local Sinhala and Tamil New Year with several celebrations held across the country.
