Colombo, May 9 (newsin.asia) – The number of coronavirus positive patients detected in Sri Lanka crossed the 125,000 mark today (9) as another 2659 new Covid-19 cases had been detected within the day.
The total number of COVID-19 positive cases stands at 125,906 with 20,657 active cases across the island according to the Epidemiology Unit.

1,365 more individuals recovered from COVID-19 bringing the total recoveries in the country to 104,463, the Epidemiology Unit confirmed.
This is the first occasion where the number of daily COVID cases has surpassed the 2,000 mark in the country.
According to the Director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of Sri Jayewardenepura University Dr Chandima Jeewandara, the variants so far detected in Sri Lanka along with the relevant areas are as follows,
1. B.1.1.7 (UK variant/Kent variant)
- Colombo: Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), Homagama, Borelasgamuwa.
- Kurunegala: Polpithigama, Kuliyapitiya, Nikawaratiya, Ganewatta, Ambalanpola. Giriulla, Pannala, Wariyapola.
- Kalutara: Agalawatta, Pimbura, Panadura, Palindaruwa, Bandaragama.
- Kandy: Panduwasnuwara, Kandy, Hingurakgoda.
- Polonnaruwa: Medirigiriya.
- Mannar: Mannar town.
2. The B.1.428 (Denmark/European/ Middle East variant)
- Jaffna (especially Nallur cluster)
3. B.1.411 (Sri Lankan variant)
- Batticaloa
- Colombo
4. B.1.525 (Nigerian variant)
- Bandaragama
