October 27 – Finally, some good and certain news amid the never-ending uncertainty that is 2020: Tom Holland has given us confirmation that production is moving ahead on the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While Black Widow has been delayed and a number of Disney+ streaming series projects – including WandaVision and The Falcon And The Winter Soldier – are in the pipeline, the Peter Parker actor shared the welcome news that Spider-Man 3, still untitled, starts shooting any day now.
Holland posted a video (mask on, of course) on his Instagram story, confirming he’s officially landed in Atlanta to start shooting the sequel to last summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home – just days after finishing work on the Uncharted movie. In the video shared on social media, Holland seems excited and ready to go, saying “Ok, so we just landed in Atlanta, and uh… it’s time for Spider-Man 3! Let’s go!”
While there’s no further word on plot details yet, let’s remind ourselves that there’s some pretty exciting cast members on board for this one – and the promise of a number of crossovers from various Spider-Man universes.
Benedict Cumberbatch will be on board reprising his role as Doctor Strange, while Jamie Foxx is also coming back as Electro – last seen in the 2014 Andrew Garfield Spidey sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2. There’s no word on Garfield or Tobey Maguire making an appearance yet, but don’t rule it out. Could something like a live-action take on Into The Spider-Verse? Yes please.
Holland’s third Spider-Man film is still set for a December 2021 release date – so far, so good in terms of coronavirus-related scheduling. And now that we have the promise that production is officially in motion, fingers crossed that we can still count on it swinging into cinemas by then.
