December 6 (Daily Mirror) – The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) along with 16 other political parties, including the SLFP will contest the upcoming general elections under the Sri Lanka People’s Freedom Alliance, which was formed before the Nov. 16 Presidential Elections, MP Udaya Gammanpila told the Daily Mirror yesterday.
Gammanpila said that all 16 parties had agreed to contest the general election under this broad alliance in order to work towards a victory at the polls. The Daily Mirror learns that former President Maithripala Sirisena who will contest the polls from the Polonnaruwa District, will also toe the SLFP party line, to contest under this new alliance.
Discussions between the SLPP and other minority parties who are not a part of this new alliance is also underway.
An agreement was signed between the 16 parties to form the Sri Lanka Freedom People’s Alliance on October 31 to support President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Polls.
Some of the other parties in the alliance include the UPFA, SLPP National Freedom Front (NFF), Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) and Mahajana Eksath Peramuna.
