July 4 (Economy Next) – Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers had given initial clearance for a cable car project in hill country town of Nuwara Eliya targeting local and foreign tourists, the state information office said.
A 50 million US dollar project has been proposed by a firm called Outdoor Engineering Lanka (Pvt) Ltd and its partner Doppelmayr Cable Car, a foreign firm.
The firm will build a cable car system on 21 towers running from Nanu Oya railway station to Lake Gregory in Nuwara Eliya.
Nuwara Eliya is around 8 kilometres away from Nanu Oya.
The cable car system will also connect the Nuwara Eliya Race Course and Single Tree Hill.
It is expected to operate 86 cars which can carry 10 passengers each.
In the first stage, 43 cars are expected to be built.
The cabinet of ministers had given clearance to set up a project with Board of Investment facilities, for a proposal submitted by the Minister of Plantations Industries.
