Colombo, Sept 29 (NIA) – Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils, on Thursday announced that all Municipal Councils islandwide had decided to refrain from collecting garbage unless they were segregated from Nov. 1.
The agreement was reached following discussions held on Thursday morning between the Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils, Faiszer Musthapha and all Municipal Commissioners.
The Ministry further said that residential garbage must be segregated as biodegradable waste, non-biodegradable waste and plastic or glass in order for it to be collected.
Officials and residents alleged earlier this year that recycling household waste material collected by local councils was running into various problems due to poor planning, improper collection mechanisms and lack of public cooperation.
Residents alleged that local councils had issued conflicting and confusing instructions regarding the sorting out of household waste which led to a poor implementation of the programme.
