Dhaka, November 19 (newsin.asia): Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has told the Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that Bangladesh must settle the Rohingya refugees’ issue with Myanmar bilaterally “through dialogue and discussion.”
Wang met Hasina here, en route to Naypyitaw, the capital of Myanmar, to attend the Asia-Europe Meeting (AEM) of Foreign Ministers to be held from November 20 and 21.
In a report on the meeting Xinhua said that Wang told Hasina that he expects Bangladesh and Myanmar to sign an agreement “as scheduled” on the repatriation of the Rohingya people who had crossed into Bangladesh.
China is willing to continue to offer support for a “proper settlement” of the issue, Wang added.
Wang also met with his Bangladeshi counterpart Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali on the same day.
The Chinese Foreign Minister and the Bangladeshi Prime Minister emphasized their willingness to further deepen pragmatic cooperation. Hasina thanked the Chinese side for offering long-term support and aid for Bangladesh’s development and construction. She added that Bangladesh is willing to further deepen “pragmatic cooperation” with the Chinese side in all fields.
Implemention of China-Myanmar-India Corridor
For his part, Wang expressed the hope that the two sides could speed up the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, and actively push forward the building of Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar-Economic Corridor.
Both sides agreed to strengthen mutual trust and mutual support, and boost cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. China will continue to encourage Chinese enterprises to invest in Bangladesh, Wang added.
The Chinese Foreign Minister also suggested that the two sides explore maritime cooperation.
