Colombo, May 18th: Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa said yesterday that some government officials had plotted to cause a human catastrophe on May 9th.
DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon was prepared to use water cannons to disperse the mob coming to Galle Face to harm peaceful demonstrators, Weerawansa told Parliament.
Tennakoon had received orders from the President, according to reports, to disperse the ruling party supporters on their way to Galle Face.

He did say, though, that Tennakoon also received orders not to disperse the demonstrators.
The DIG was reportedly advised not to interfere in the feud between President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s two brothers.
