Mumbai, January 17 (NIA): Undeterred by the possibility of being trolled in the social media by Islamic zealots and Kashmiri separatists for supporting Kashmiri child star Zaira Wasim, actor and film maker Aamir Khan stuck his neck out to declare that the 16 year old school girl is not only his “role model” but a “role model for the world.”
As a result of abusive Facebook postings, Zaira had to “confess/apologize” for acting as a female wrestler in the box office hit Dangal made by Aamir Khan and deny that she wanted to be a “role model” for Kashmiri youth.
Apologizing for doing what she had done in the past six months (acting in the film) she said it would be a “disgrace” for her and all Kashmiris to be considered a role model.
While most Indians considered this confession and apology to be the result of threats including a threat to her life, many wondered if anyone would dare to or find it worthwhile to come to the support of the 16 year old kid living in Kashmir in the midst of constant danger to life and limb from terrorists.
Some social media comments also wondered if Aamir Khan would dare to come out in support of his star against zealots of his own faith, in the same way as he condemned Hindu zealots who were killing Muslims for allegedly eating beef. Aamir had irked a lot of people when he said that zealots of Hindutva were making him and his wife Kiran Rao contemplate leaving India.
But Khan did tweet in support of Zaira and said in no uncertain terms, how despicable the attacks on Zaira were.He said:
