Colombo, November 9 (newsin.asia) – The number of coronavirus patients detected in Sri Lanka crossed the 14,000 mark today as another 172 new cases have been detected within the day (09).
The total number of confirmed cases stands at 14,101 with 5,186 active cases across the island according to the Health Promotion Bureau. 8,880 cases have recovered so far with 35 deaths reported.
The 35th death was reported yesterday (08) of a 78-year-old male who passed away upon admission to hospital and was found to be infected with the novel coronavirus. The cause of death had been declared as heart disease complications due to Covid-19 infection the Director-General of Health Services confirmed.
The Welikada and Boagambara prisons have reported a total of 107 prison inmates in the country to have contracted the COVID-19 virus, the Commissioner-General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said.
The Attorney General (AG) has directed the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) to grant bail to Suspects in remand and file charges in order to reduce prison overcrowding.
