Colombo, March 5 – Scientific surveys have found that the oxygen percentage in the atmosphere of the Colombo city is gradually declining in proportion to its population, the Ministry of Environment said.
This was raised during a discussion held at the Ministry of Environment with the participation of subject Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, Colombo Mayoress Rosy Senanayake and other officials yesterday.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Environment together with the Colombo Municipal Council have planned to launch a tree planting programme to address the issue.
It also planned to initiate a day-to-day oxygen testing programme in the city of Colombo.
Colombo Mayoress Rosy Senanayake requested the Ministry of Environment to provide necessary expertise and technical assistance for the conservation of the environment in the Colombo Municipal area. (Daily Mirror)
