Aug. 2 – Three days after a woman and her teen daughter were gang-raped in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr, in northern India, their family has threatened to commit suicide if the accused are not brought to book within three months.
At a late night press conference on Monday, the victim’s husband narrated the horror that the six family members went through while they were on their way to Shahjahanpur from Noida for the funeral of a relative.
“If the criminals are not hanged, me, my wife and my daughter will commit suicide. If the police are unable to do so, then hand over those criminals to us. We will punish them ourselves even if we are jailed,” said the inconsolable father .
“After the culprits ran away around 1:30 am, we dialled 100, but there was no response. The control room line remained busy for at least 20 minutes after which we called a relative in Noida who got us in contact with an SSP,” he said. Even after that, the police arrived only around 4:45 p.m.
“When I got down from the car to inspect the tyres, around five men held me hostage at gunpoint. They tied me, made me cross the road and took me to a field, leaving the women behind in the car. The attackers then beat me up with rods, hammers and with the stock of their gun,” he said.
“While I sat across the Bachcha Road where the car was stuck, they stripped my wife and 14-year-old daughter, robbed them of their jewellery and raped them in front of my eyes. They were threatening my daughter who was resenting that they would kill me if she didn’t oblige,” he said. While two men raped his wife, another raped his daughter. A police patrol also drove past the field while the men were committing the rapes, but the victims couldn’t shout for help as their mouths were gagged, the man said.
Police on Sunday said they had detained atleast 15 suspects over the incident.
