In an interview with BBC, the Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremasinghe said that the country’s situation will get worse before getting better.
However, he assured that the people will have enough food to eat and there won’t be a hunger crisis. The PM will ensure this through assistance from countries like India and Japan, among others. “They won’t allow people to starve”, the PM said.
To the question on how he became the PM at this time, Ranil Wickremasinghe said that he was elected by Parliament and he had the support of both sides to tackle the economic situation.
The PM said that he plans to change many of the policies set by the Rajapakse government. He will not bother looking at any books as “the books are cooked”. The PM’s approach will be to study the actual situation as of now.
When asked about a timeline to turn things around, the PM replied he will let the public know once he has settled the situation and spoken with other countries.
