Colombo, Jan 4 (NIA) – Guinness World Records, on Wednesday, said Sri Lanka’s attempt to construct the ‘World’s Tallest Christmas Tree’ was a ‘fantastic achievement’ and it encouraged the island to make an application via its website.
“We haven’t received an application for this attempt,” Amber-Georgina Gill, the UK and International Press Officer of Guinness World Records Ltd. told NewsIn.Asia, when inquired if Sri Lanka has made any application yet.
“It is a fantastic achievement and we would encourage them to make an application via our website and upload all their evidence for our Records Management team to review and ratify if successful,” she said.
Sri Lanka, last month constructed a 220 feet tall artificial Christmas Tree at the Galle Face Green in Colombo, breaking the world record for the World’s Tallest Christmas Tree.
The tree was initially planned to go up 325 feet, but due to work delays and a deadline of Christmas eve, workers were able to go up to 220 feet.
However the downsized Christmas Tree was still the world’s tallest, organisers said.
The tree, which will be up till Jan 6 has drawn thousands of people to visit Galle Face to view the tree.
“We never expected so many people to come visit. The response we have received is amazing,” one of the organizers said.
Before Sri Lanka, the record for the world’s tallest artificial Christmas tree was held by a Chinese firm that put up a 55-metre-high (180 ft) tree-like tower of lights and synthetic foliage, ornaments and lamps in the city of Guangzhou last year.
Sri Lanka’s Christmas Tree costed an estimated 80,600 US dollars and was constructed on private funds.
Sri Lanka plans to make an application to Guinness World Records over its achievement.
