Colombo, March 8 – Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said that it is with great pleasure he adds his wishes on the International Women’s Day, which is celebrated under the theme, Rataki, Dayaki, Lowaki Eya, (She; the Country, the Nation and the World)
“Even though one day is dedicated to celebrate women rights in the world, it is my belief that every day should be dedicated to the rights of women,” the PM said. “A woman becomes a daughter, a wife as well as the greatest figure, mother in the world. Existence of mankind including each and every predominant figure is based on women.
“Therefore, women should be given due respect in the society. The Vision of Prosperity policy also prioritizes women’s rights and prominence is given to empower them as courageous women.
“As a government, we strongly condemn violence against women as well as discrimination. We as a country also experience that opportunities for the rise of women are beneficial for society.
“The heroism and leadership of the Sri Lankan woman is exemplified to the world by the example of Viharamahadevi from the ancient times and the example of Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the first female Prime Minister.
“It is a matter of pride that women in this country today are carrying out many responsibilities in the motherland in various fields in line with those influences.
“We also appreciate the involvement of women economically, socially and politically. The woman who strives to secure the family, the smallest unit in the society, has finally contributed to secure the whole country.
“Due to various reasons women are facing various challenges. In this challenging world, every woman should be vigilant. Your thoughts and actions define your victory and defeat.
“So, I invite all women to choose challenges that come on their way. I remind you that everyone is looking forward to the future of the motherland as well as the developed world, which will be built on the contribution of your community,” the Prime Minister said.
