February 19 – The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 auction set the tone for what could be another exciting season of T20 cricket as Chennai witnessed a lot of action on Thursday. As many as 57 players were bought and a total of Rs 145.3 crore was spent at the mini-auction.
22 overseas players were sold and it was South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris who broke the all-time record for the most expensive player when Rajashthan Royals fended off a stiff battle from Punjab Kings. On the other hand, Glenn Maxwell continued his run of fetching big money at IPL auction despite having an ordinary season in IPL 2020 as he was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Riley Meredith also broke the record for the most expensive overseas uncapped player when he was picked up by Punjab Kings for Rs 8 crore.
Uncapped India off-spinner Krishnappa Gowtham fetched Rs 9.2 crore as Chennai Super Kings went after off-spinning all-rounders at the auction.
There were some surprises too as India’s Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara was picked up by CSK while Harbhajan Singh and Kedar Jadhav found late takers in Kolkata Knight Rider and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Sachin Tendulkar’s son and left-arm pacer Arjun Tendulkar was the last pick at the auction as Mumbai Indians bought him for Rs 20 lakh.
