November 29 (newsin.asia) – Violence against women and girls is a grave violation of human rights. Its impact ranges from immediate to long-term multiple physical, sexual and mental consequences for women and girls, including death.
One in three female homicides in Sri Lanka are related to intimate partner violence and 69 percent of such incidences go unreported, according to a study done in five provinces commissioned by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
A quick Q&A with Shanali Abeysinghe, secretary of the project – Someone’s Daughter.
1. What is Someones Daughter?
Someone’s Daughter is an initiative by the Rotaract Club of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in order to raise awareness and gain support for women violence issues that are prevalent in Sri Lanka.
2. How is the response from the public?
Reputable artists such as Mr. Thumindu Dodanthenna, Lahiru Perera, Miss Eshani Diana, the Embassador for youth for Human Rights International, Mrs. Sawrna Sumanasekara, Ministry of women and child affairs, chairman of the national committee on women, Mr. W. Jayasiri and an expert in the field, Dr. Samitha Ethuldoraarachchi joined hands with us for the first phase of the project which is a social media campaign.
3. What do you plan to do?
Mainly, there are 2 phases in this project. Currently, we are in the 1st phase of our project which is a social media campaign, organized with the purpose of drawing the attention of the public to this serious issue of violence against women.
The main goal of our first phase is to create a large crowd surrounding our voice against this issue and public awareness of the issue.
Until now, we reached the public creating posts through media like Facebook and WhatsApp and also we wrote so many articles on this matter.
Our second phase is a workshop that gives a message to society and insight into the issue.
What sort of help can the public provide?
Everyone can join with us and show the world their objection to violence against women. People can give their ideas and opinions through our FB page as well.
