August 9 (newsin.asia) – International Youth Day (August 12) is an awareness day designated by the United Nations. The purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth.
Sustainable Development Goals Youth Network of Sri Lanka (SDGYNSL) initiated by SUNFO is planning to commemorate “International Youth Day” by organizing a “Bicycle Parade” on Aug 14 2019, at 8.00AM, Vihara Maha Devi Park, Colombo 7. Sri Lanka. The main goal will be to focus on “Sustainable Development Goals”.
Sri Lanka-UN Friendship Organisation (SUNFO) was inaugurated on 22 May 1999 under the patronage of Hon. Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and with the blessings of United Nations Resident Coordinator as a non-political, non-racial and non-sectarian organization working for peace, harmony, and well-being of mankind according to the principles of United Nations. SUNFO developed cooperation between peoples of Sri Lanka and other UN member nations under SUNFO Global Village program of SUNFO Global Federation. During the last 20 years, over 1 million have participated in SUNFO programs, activities, initiatives and mobilizations.
SUNFO created volunteer initiatives SDGYNSL (Sustainable Goals Youth Network of Sri Lanka), SDGCF (Sustainable Development Goals Citizens Forum of Sri Lanka), SDGCPSL (Sustainable Development Goals Children’s Parliament of Sri Lanka) & SDGWF (Sustainable Development Goals Women’s Platform of Sri Lanka with the patronage of Patron Hon.Karu Jayasuriya, The Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a bold, universal agreement to end poverty in all its dimensions and craft an equal, just and secure world-for people, planet and prosperity by 2030. Five “P’s” of Sustainable Development are PEOPLE – PLANET – PROSPERITY –PARTNERSHIP & PEACE.
The 17 SDG’s and 169 targets are a part of transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted by 193 Member States at the historic UN General assembly summit on September 2015, and came into effect on January 1, 2016, towards 31 December 2030 (15 years).
The SDG’s have been developed through an unprecedented consultative process that brought national governments and millions of citizens from across the globe together to negotiate and adopt the ambitious agenda. SUNFO organized 9 provincial consultations, national consultation and youth consultation in Sri Lanka titled as “Global Goals after 2015” in the year 2014/15 which led towards the SDGs.

“International Youth Day SDG Cycle Parade” at Vihara Mahadevi Park, Colombo on Aug 14 at 8.00AM is a very special opportunity to youth, children and citizens to join and support. You can join by cycling, decorating designed cycles or as volunteers. Participants will receive a “International Youth Day Certificate of Participation” while creative bicycles may win special awards and gifts too.
