Sept 17 (NIA) – Sri Lanka is to construct a large marina in the southern tourist town of Galle and will soon call for expressions of interest to build it, the government said here on Saturday.
Sources said that some international companies had already shown interest in the project and the government would soon start discussions.
Galle has gained popularity in the recent years after it received a facelift with the refurbishment of the Galle Fort and the old dutch hospital. The Galle Harbour also has a Sri Lanka navy base and the port is used by sports boats and yachts, as well as cruise ships.
Dutch Fort at Galle, close to the island’s southernmost point, 173km from Colombo, has the distinction of being the best-preserved sea fort in South Asia. This World Heritage Site on the south coast was the main port of call for ships sailing between the East and Europe.
