Male, March 17 (Avas): The Indian Minister of External Affairs Shushma Swaraj arrived in the Maldives Sunday on an official visit to the Indian Ocean archipelago.
She was welcomed at Velana International Airport by her Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid.
During her two day visit to the Maldives she will be meeting President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, along with parliament speaker Gasim Ibrahim and members of the cabinet, to discuss ways to strengthen ties and cooperation between the two countries.
India’s top diplomat is also expected to discuss both existing and future bilateral agreements including further cooperation in areas such as health and trade.
AVAS understands that the government has planned a special ceremony to honor the visiting Indian minister, though government officials have remained tight-lipped over the visit.
India has seen a major upswing in ties with its tiny neighbor since the then opposition led by Solih secured a stunning victory in the presidential elections last November.
