Male, March 14 (Avas): Aishath Nahula, the Maldivian Transport Minister and wife of the Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Gasim Ibrahim, has stated that she would not support any candidate backed by former President Abdulla Yameen.
Her husband and JP leader Gasim Ibrahim had said that Yameen should be released from jail because it is wrong to jail a man before his guilt is proved in a court of law. Yameen is in remand in a money laundering case. Gasim had said that he had earlier protested against the detention of former President Nasheed also.
Aishath Nahula made the statement while answering a question posed by a reporter after inaugurating a newly established hotel in Hulhumale’ on Wednesday night.
The minister said she could never forgive former President Yameen for his actions. Aisha’s political career took off after she became politically active with the arrest of her family members during President Yameen’s tenure in 2017. Charged with bribery, her husband Gasim Ibrahim and step-son Ibrahim Siyad Gasim were held under arrest until the end of their trial during the former President’s rule.
