Aug 5 (NIA) – Flights arriving and departing from Mumbai, India’s financial city, were suspended on Friday as days of heavy rains lashed out across many states across the country, an Indian government spokesman said.
Trains were also suspended as several areas remained submerged in water.
The spokesperson said that emergency and rescue teams had been deployed across the city in event of an emergency situation or immediate evacuation.
Meanwhile, the Thane Municipal Corporation, in Mumbai, has also started working on an action plan to tackle any rain related crisis to surface in the city.
So far, atleast 29 people are missing from days of torrential rains and recuers fear that they may have been swept away in the gushing waters.
On Aug 3, a main road bridge linking Mumbai to India’s tourism city of Goa collapsed after days of heavy rain, leaving at least 20 people dead.
Two passenger buses and several vehicles plunged into the river when the road bridge collapsed and recue efforts are still ongoing to search for survivors.
Every year India records a very heavy rainfall during its peak monsoon season from July to September with several deaths reported.
Last year, at least 269 people were killed, mostly in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, during the peak monsoon rains.
