Colombo, April 6 (newsin.asia): On 5 and 6 April, 2,456 Chinese nationals working or residing in Sri Lanka received their first jabs of Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine.
Vaccination took place in Colombo, Hambantota, Kandy and Puttalam. The vaccination rolled out smoothly, with no adverse effects reported so far. Prof. Channa Jayasumana, Minister for Pharmaceuticals visited a vaccination center in Colombo.
The second shots are scheduled in 3 weeks’ time.
The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Colombo, together with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Overseas Chinese Association, expressed their greatest gratitude towards the Sri Lankan government, the Ministry of Health, local municipalities and all the front line medical workers who provided tremendous assistance and hospitalities in this regard, the Chinese embassy said in a press release.
The Sinopharm vaccine, which is currently restricted to the Chinese community in Sri Lanka, is expected to be administered to Sri Lankan once it is approved by the designated government expert committee. The committee is currently waiting for some technical data from the manufacturer in China.
