Colombo, March 21 (newsin.asia) – Sri Lanka’s ruling United National Party, on Wednesday said a no confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe handed over to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya by Joint Opposition members with only 55 signatures was a ‘joke’ as 113 signatures were required for it to be passed.
Senior UNP Parliamentarian and Tourism Minister, John Amaratunga told newsin.asia the UNP remained confident of defeating the no confidence motion after it was handed over to Speaker Jayasuriya in Parliament.
Amaratunga said the UNP would remain in government along with Wickremesinghe and would work towards the benefit of the nation.
“A no confidence motion with 55 signatures is a joke. The matter will be crushed as no UNP parliamentarian will support this move,” Amaratunga said.
The Joint Opposition, headed by former President Mahinda Rajapakse handed over the no confidence motion against Wickremesinghe to Speaker Karu Jasysuriya in Parliament.
A total 51 members from the Joint Opposition and 4 members from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which is a coalition partner in the unity government, signed the motion.
