Colombo, Feb 27 (NIA) – Seven people including an underworld leader were killed when a group of unidentified men opened fire on a prison bus in Kalutara, in Sri Lanka’s south, on Monday, police said.
The bus was on its way to the Kalutara Courts complex when the group arrived in a vehicle and opened fire on the bus.
Among those dead were two prison officers and notorious underworld figure Anura Udayashantha alias Samayan.
Five other prisoners were also wounded in the incident and have been rushed to the Nagoda hospital.
A police spokesperson told NewsIn.Asia that an immediate investigation has been launched and the area has been cordoned off.
Underworld figure, Anura Udayashantha alias Samayan, who was killed in the shoot out is believed to be the main target. Investigators said this was not the first time Samayan was targetted.
